PhD student (research assistant) (m/w/d) - Institute of Cognitive Neurology and Dementia Research

Third-party funding

These are your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Record and analyze intracranial EEG (iEEG) data from epilepsy patients using Behnke-Fried electrodes. Analysis will involve study of local field potentials and single-unit activity.
  • Design and implement cognitive tasks for studying human memory in epilepsy patients.
  • Analyze human behavioral data and relate it to iEEG data.
  • Analyze medical images (CT scans and high-resolution MRI) of the human brain and localize electrodes.
  • Interact with patients to describe planned experiments.
  • Perform experiments of deep-brain stimulation in epilepsy patients aimed at studying memory function.
  • Design and implement closed-loop experiments for teasing apart cause and effect between electrophysiological signals and cognition.
  • Compile written reports of research activity, including peer-reviewed publications and conference abstracts.
  • Orally present updates and seminars about the progress in research activity.
  • Coordinate research activities with the group leader and the other team members.
  • Supervise interns and Master students.

Please bring with you:

  • You have a medical degree or a Master in Biomedical Engineering, Neural Engineering, Neuroscience, Cognitive Psychology or a related field. You will bring willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, motivation to conduct cutting-edge neuroscience research and expertise in at least two of the following areas:
  • neurobiology of learning and memory,
  • analysis of electrophysiological data,
  • human neuroanatomy and medical imaging,
  • invasive/non-invasive stimulation of neural tissue,
  • cognitive neuropsychology,
  • computer programming in Matlab or Python.
  • Good command of English language is needed. Intermediate/advanced knowledge of German language will be highly appreciated. Willingness to conduct research in a clinical setting is required.

We offer:

  • The Institute of Cognitive Neurology and Dementia Research (IKND) at the Medical Faculty of the Otto von Guericke University (OvGU) invites applications from highly motivated candidates to fill a PhD student position in the field of neurophysiology of human cognition. You will have the opportunity to learn how to conduct highly innovative and multi-disciplinary scientific research in human neuroscience and neurotechnology.
  • You will be part of the newly formed group of Dr. Davide Ciliberti at the IKND. The goal of the Ciliberti group is to investigate the electrophysiological mechanisms of memory in the human brain and to develop neurotechnologies for memory restoration. The lab leverages on the unique opportunity to intracranially record electrophysiological signals from neurosurgical epilepsy patients. A wide variety of cutting-edge techniques will be uniquely combined: electroencephalography (iEEG), single-unit recordings, deep brain electrical stimulation, cognitive testing, high resolution 7-Tesla imaging, MEG, EEG and behavioral/neurophysiological closed-loop experiments. The lab will operate in collaboration with Prof. E. Düzel (IKND), Prof. R. Quiroga (OvGU), Prof. F. Mormann (UBonn) and with the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery. Prof. Düzel will be the promoter of your PhD thesis.
  • You will be able to join the graduate research training group of the SFB training group (sfb1436.de) and you will benefit from the excellent working conditions in Magdeburg, as one of Germany's leading centers for Neurobiology and Brain Science.

Compensation:

The salary group E13 according to “Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst de Länder” awaits you.
