Interprofessional skills in medicine: strengthening teamwork

The quality of patient care depends crucially on cooperation between different disciplines and professional groups in the healthcare system. For this reason, there is an increasing demand for the implementation of interprofessional skills in medical studies. The teaching unit "Team Competencies - Professional Cooperation in Medicine" aims to sensitize medical students to interprofessional thinking and action in order to contribute to successful teamwork in the future. The teaching unit also creates the basis for the adequate implementation of interprofessional skills in the teaching curriculum of medical studies at the UMMD.
The teaching concept comprises six teaching units in the third year of study. While the two lectures impart the necessary theoretical knowledge, practical exercises on validated interprofessional instruments such as the SBAR handover scheme and interprofessional ward rounds are practiced in the seminar.It is based on the required longitudinal teaching curriculum Communicative Competence in Medicine and the four core areas of interprofessional competence: values and ethics, communication, roles and responsibilities and collaboration.
The teaching unit is evaluated by means of structured lesson observations and quantitative and qualitative student assessments.The results are used to continuously develop the teaching project and the Communicative Competence in Medicine curriculum. Future ideas include the establishment of interactive learning videos, student self-reflection reports and the promotion of a constructive error culture in medicine. The continuation of the project includes the provision of a teaching guide and the training of teaching staff at the Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy
