Magdeburg University Medical Center: Invitation to a Public Event

Bipolar disorders - help for affected persons and relatives

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy of the University Medical Center Magdeburg, together with the department of relatives of the German Society for Bipolar Disorders (DGBS), invites you to the public event "Bipolar Disorders - balancing act between wanting to help and setting limits" from 9:30 to 17:00. The aim is to provide information about the clinical picture as well as strategies for difficult situations.

The event will take place in house 4 (1st floor, conference room) on the campus of the University Medical Center Magdeburg, Leipziger Str. 44. Participation is free of charge.

Bipolar disorders used to be called manic-depressive illness. Episodic, bipolar opposing (bipolar) excursions of drive, activity, and mood occur that alternate well above normal levels toward depression or mania. Bipolar mixed states are characterized by a simultaneous or rapidly alternating occurrence of symptoms of mania and depression. Such mixed states are common (occurring in approximately 70-90 percent of patients), but are often overlooked. It is important to recognize and treat them, otherwise they are associated with a poorer prognosis and respond less well to medication. Often, those affected also show psychotic symptoms and have a high risk of suicide.

Relatives are an important form of support for people with bipolar disorder. However, not only do they suffer from the illness, but also their entire social environment.

Relatives can have a positive influence on the course of treatment of the patient. However, they need specific information about the illness and concrete behavioral tips for dealing with the person with bipolar disorder.

The experts' presentations will focus on clarifying various aspects on the topic of bipolar disorder.

Prof. Dr. Johann Steiner, acting director of the University Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, will report on the causes and treatment options for bipolar disorder. Reiner Schmidt, a member of the DGBS, will provide information on the concerns and needs of relatives and help in everyday life in his lecture. Also an important point of the event are the "possibilities of resilience and self-care". Karl-Heinz Möhmann, member of the DGBS, will give a presentation on this topic. In the last lecture, Christopher Scharfenberger will give helpful advice on "Support through self-help".

At the end of the event, there will still be the opportunity to discuss open questions together.
