Great interest in PJ events

06.05.2024 -

Interactive information events offer a comprehensive insight into the practical year (PJ) at Magdeburg University Hospital and its teaching hospitals.

In April 2024, the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Medicine Magdeburg hosted two PJ information events for students who will begin their PJ in November 2024 or May 2025. On 10 April 2024, the University Hospital presented the opportunities for PJ training in the compulsory subjects of surgery and internal medicine as well as in numerous elective subjects. The prospective PJ students had the opportunity to talk to the PJ contact persons at the clinics in person and share their experiences with former students who had already completed a PJ at the respective clinic. General medicine staff also provided information about PJ training in the general medicine teaching practices.

On 24 April 2024, the students had the opportunity to make direct contact with the teaching hospitals and find out more about the organisation of the practical year on site. There are currently 16 academic teaching hospitals that support student training in the PJ as cooperation partners of the Magdeburg Faculty of Medicine.

In the run-up to the events, students were informed in detail about the allocation procedure for PJ places, hardship regulations, tertials abroad and insurance cover. The Office of the Dean of Studies, in particular the PJ coordinator Jutta Brada, were available to answer any questions. The students were also informed about the good news that the medical faculties of Magdeburg University Hospital and Halle University Hospital decided at the beginning of 2024 to raise the allowance for medical students in their practical year to the maximum BAföG rate of 934 euros from 1 April 2024. The faculty is also campaigning for further improvements such as appropriate learning and examination times.

All those involved, including the University Hospital, the academic teaching hospitals, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians and the Medical Association, were keen to promote the PJ in and around Saxony-Anhalt, as it offers insights into various medical specialities and is an important building block for the later choice of speciality and getting to know potential places of work.
