Practical project "Pupils for pupils"

16.10.2024 -

A successful start for our OTA and ATA trainees

After five weeks of theory, the first-year trainees for operating theatre assistants (OTA) and anaesthesia technicians (ATA) started their careers with a two-day practical project. "Students for students" was organised by the second-year trainees, who actively supported their new colleagues and taught them important basics for their practical work. The "newcomers" were given an introduction to the practical workbook and learnt how to handle typical materials and instruments used in operating theatres and anaesthesia. Terms such as "kick", "little mouse" and "little red riding hood" were also explained to make the technical language of the operating theatre team easier to understand. There were also tips on communication: How do I introduce myself on the first day? How do I make a confident phone call, even if I'm new to the team?

On the second day, we went straight into practice. Under the guidance of the experienced trainees, the "newcomers" practised entering the operating theatre area and hygienic hand disinfection. Together, they got their bearings in the operating theatre and reduced their fear of contact.

A successful start to the practical world

The "Pupils for Pupils" project has shown how valuable the exchange between the training years is.The experienced trainees were not only able to pass on their knowledge, but also take on responsibility and accompany the newcomers as equals. At the same time, the newcomers received a practical introduction and learnt the first important basics in a relaxed atmosphere.

With a great deal of commitment and team spirit, the foundations were laid for a successful start in practice - and thus also the basis for further learning and growth in the OTA and ATA training programme.
