Start of Professional Life for Young Physicians
A total of 170 students successfully completed their medical studies at the Medical Faculty of the University of Magdeburg in 2022.
After a two-year break, students of human medicine at the Medical Faculty of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg were again given their ceremonial farewells and released into professional life for the first time in the winter semester 2022/23. 152 doctors received their certificates on December 16, 2022, during a ceremony at the AMO Kulturhaus Magdeburg with more than 600 guests. Already in spring, 18 medical students had successfully completed their studies in human medicine. In addition, this year also 8 graduates in the master's program in immunology successfully completed their studies. This year's keynote speech was held by Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Hachenberg, Director of the University Clinic for Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Magdeburg. The event was musically accompanied by the academic orchestra of the University of Magdeburg conducted by Mauro Mariani.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Daniela C. Dieterich congratulated the young medical professionals: "We are full of pride and joy that you have successfully followed the chosen path with perseverance and energy to the end. We celebrate your personal success today and wish you all the very best as you embark on your careers. Continue to stay alert, motivated, inquisitive, appreciative and become active shapers of the healthcare system for the benefit of your patients. Thank you for your extracurricular involvement - even during the pandemic - you have made a lasting impact on the campus and the city. Of course, we hope that as many of you as possible will stay in Saxony-Anhalt to further strengthen medical care here locally."
The 152 graduates of the fall class completed their studies with an average grade of 2.43, 9 received the rating "very good". The best graduate with an overall grade of 1.0 was Leonie Oevel. Nearly 47 percent of the participants in the graduate survey stated that they would first begin their professional careers in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to internal medicine and surgery, cardiology, anesthesiology, orthopedics and urology were cited as the most common specialties in which young medical professionals would like to work. Among the young medical graduates, 34 are from Saxony-Anhalt and 8 are international graduates.

Dean of Studies Prof. Dr. Christoph Lohmann is also pleased with the outstanding achievements of his future colleagues and hopes that they will continue to stay connected to their alma mater beyond that, for example through the Förderverein Medizinstudierender Magdeburg or through the alumni network of former students of the university. He says: "Each of our graduates is an ambassador for Magdeburg University Medical Center, for the city and beyond. With the successful completion of the demanding medical studies, the young doctors have mastered an important milestone for a successful entry into the profession. Now they must apply the knowledge they have acquired and their own experience in practice for the benefit of their patients, and I wish them all the best in this endeavor."
Traditionally, not only students are honored at the ceremony, but also outstanding teachers. This year, Prof. Dr. Herrmann-Josef Rothkötter for preclinical studies, Prof. Dr. Alexander Link for clinical studies and Evelyn Busse for her special commitment to teaching were honored as teaching award winners of the Medical Faculty.
