PJ Journal Club
Project management: Dr. Peter Lemmer, Senior Physician, Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectious Diseases
The "PJ Journal Club" project is a pilot project of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectiology in collaboration with the Institute of Social Medicine and Health Systems Research to teach, deepen and apply scientific skills as part of medical studies. The aim is to teach medical students in their practical year (PJ) the ability to critically analyze and present scientific publications. By integrating e-learning modules into the VIPER teaching platform, students are enabled to research and evaluate relevant publications and present them concisely in a journal club.
The current status of the project includes the further development of five e-learning modules and an orientation module, which were already integrated into the VIPER platform last year (the teaching project was also funded in 2023). These modules cover topics such as evidence-based work, literature research, evaluation of scientific studies, statistical principles and presentation techniques.
The practical implementation is carried out by PJ students, who analyze scientific publications in small groups and present them as part of a journal club. The feedback from students has been positive so far, as the course content makes an important contribution to promoting scientific skills.
The plan is to extend the concept to other clinics and institutes at Magdeburg University Hospital and to use the evaluation results to continuously improve the teaching project. Publications will make the experiences and findings of the project accessible to a wider public.
