Sleep problems can have many causes. Physical triggers such as sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, hormonal changes, or neurological disorders are often responsible. Psychological stressors such as anxiety disorders, depression, or unresolved inner conflicts can also lead to sleep disorders for which no clear physical cause can be found. In such cases, we refer to psychosomatically induced sleep problems.
Depending on the diagnosis, various drug therapies can also be used in sleep medicine, for example, sleeping pills for short-term treatment or medication to regulate the sleep-wake cycle. In addition, non-drug measures such as targeted sleep hygiene, behavioral therapy programs, or breathing therapy for sleep apnea can help. The goal is always to improve sleep quality, prevent consequential damage, and stabilize healthy sleep in the long term.
