Volunteers create oases of calm for sick children

28.05.2024 -

For more than 15 years, Volker Fuhr and Werner Brose from the aquarium association Vallisneria Magdeburg e.V. have been looking after two aquariums in the parents' home and at the pediatric haematology and oncology department at Magdeburg University Hospital. These aquariums create a positive, therapeutic environment that supports the healing process and provides a form of mental and emotional relief.

The colorful fish and the calming bubbling of the water offer the children a welcome distraction from their illness and the often stressful medical treatments. Watching the fish has a relaxing and calming effect, which can reduce stress and anxiety for both the children and their parents. They also give the two contact points a more homely atmosphere, so that our young patients and their relatives can hopefully feel a little more at ease away from their own homes.

Volker Fuhr on his voluntary work at the UMMD: "In 2005, I myself was in a situation where cancer suddenly changed my everyday life. An experience I wouldn't wish on anyone. I was lucky and was cured thanks to the help of the doctors and nurses. An experience like that leaves its mark on you. For this reason, 15 years ago I immediately agreed to take over the sponsorship of the two aquariums here at the university hospital together with Werner Brose. I want to give something back and help the sick children as much as I can - to support them as much as possible."

We would like to thank Volker Fuhr and Werner Brose from the aquarium club Vallisneria Magdeburg e.V. for their great commitment and valuable support in the regular care and maintenance of the aquariums.
