Endocrinology/Diabetology/ Metabolic Medicine
Children and adolescents with endocrine and congenital metabolic diseases and diabetes mellitus are cared for at the University Children's Hospital. For selected disease groups, such as congenital hyperinsulinism, adrenogenital syndrome, Ullrich-Turner syndrome, Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, standardized care pathways have been developed, which are used by patients throughout Germany both in the consultation hours and for day-care diagnostics and therapy.
The differential diagnosis of growth disorders, both short stature and tall stature, the avoidance of unnecessary, sometimes stressful examination methods and the counseling of the family by an experienced team are important prerequisites for targeted therapy measures. The center has decades of experience in the care of children and adolescents with various forms of short stature such as growth hormone deficiency, SHOX short stature, Silver-Russell syndrome (SRS), Noonan syndrome and other "rasopathies", as well as skeletal dysplasias.
Patients with hormonal deficits following treatment for tumor disease are treated in an interdisciplinary manner with Hematology and Oncology and Neuropediatrics.
Our team in the diabetes outpatient clinic treats and accompanies about 150 children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus and includes patients with diabetes mellitus type 1, type 2, Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) and rare forms of diabetes. Structured diabetes training is provided, as well as special training courses for caregivers, teachers and educators, and psychosocial support for families. Contacts are made with other affected individuals, families, patient organizations and appropriate self-help initiatives.
The statewide newborn screening for congenital endocrine and metabolic diseases has been established at Magdeburg University Hospital since 1992. Specialized confirmatory diagnostics and long-term care are provided in the day clinic as part of the endocrinology and metabolism consultation hours in a multiprofessional team. We offer a transition consultation for an uncomplicated transition of our adolescent patients to our adult physicians.
