Why do we need simulation patients?

Communication skills are a core competence of medical action. Training young physicians in appreciative and effective communication lays the foundation for patient satisfaction, interdisciplinary cooperation and self-confidence in their own abilities.

With the help of the simulation patient program, young doctors are given the opportunity to practice anamnesis and difficult conversation situations. With the help of actors who simulate standardized patients (simulation patients), students are given the unique opportunity to receive feedback from their patients and thus learn in a protected environment how verbal and non-verbal communication affects the patient and the situation.

 

How to become a simulation patient?

As a simulation patient (SP) or "acting patient" you will actively participate in medical education and help to create realistic scenarios of everyday medical life.

As a simulation patient (SP) or "acting patient" you are part of realistic scenarios within medical education. After role and feedback training, you will play a patient in student classes and thus help to prepare students for contact with real patients.

Prerequisite:

• You are interested in communication and role plays
• You are reliable and have time during the day (by arrangement)?
• You will be living in Magdeburg for at least two more years?
• You don't need any theatre or acting training to become a simulation patient - but if you have previous knowledge or talents, e.g. in amateur acting, they are very welcome.
• Previous medical knowledge can be helpful, but is not a prerequisite to become a simulation patient.
• You will receive an hourly remuneration of 25 €.
• The role and feedback training is free of charge for you

What is a simulation patient?

A simulation patient (SP) - also known as an "acting patient" - plays a real patient according to standardized, trained guidelines. In short role plays he "simulates" a real patient and thus helps medical students to improve their communication skills.

 

What does a simulation patient do?

• Learn about clinical illnesses on the basis of standardised roles
• Role-play typical patients
• From the patient's perspective, the SP gives feedback to the students (constructive feedback)
• The SP is part of a realistic practice situation for the students
• The SP only takes part in anamnesis and interviews. Physical examinations are only carried out after consultation during role training.
• An assignment as a SP usually lasts about 1 - 3 hours.

 

Would you be a good simulation patient?

A suitable simulation patient is someone who:

• Has an interest in role play and communication
• Is reliable and (by arrangement) flexible in terms of time
• Will live in Magdeburg for at least two more years
• Has no inhibitions about discussions and questions from others
• Is interested in participating in the medical training of future doctors
• Is reliable and binding and respects aspects of trust
• Has an interest in medical questions

 

How will we train simulation patients?

• A casting and introduction workshop, after which you can decide whether you want to become SP
• An individual role training in small groups (depending on the role you choose)
• A feedback training

 

How is a simulation patient remunerated?

• With exciting and varied work
• Payment: 25€/hour
• The SP training is free of charge
